There is nothing like the sudden panic you feel when you start to lose control of your vehicle while driving. Reckless drivers, road debris and even mechanical malfunctions on your car can all cause you to lose control.

Tire blowouts are one of the more common reasons why you may suddenly find yourself unable to control the movement of your vehicle. Understanding how to respond if your tire explodes may help you to keep calm and respond effectively.

Do not overreact

When your steering wheel jerks to one side, you may subconsciously force it back in the other direction. This harsh movement from side to side can cause you to lose control of your vehicle, resulting in a serious accident such as a rollover. According to Travelers Insurance, you should refrain from slamming on your brakes to bring your vehicle to a sudden halt. Rather, you should gently apply your brakes and gradually slow your vehicle all the while maintaining a strong grip on your steering wheel.

The feeling and motion of your vehicle will vary depending on which tire blows. If a rear tire explodes, you will feel a strong pull in the body of your car. Contrarily, you will feel this pull in the steering column if a front tire blows. If it is a tire on the right side of your car, it will pull to the right and vice versa if a left tire explodes.

Warn other drivers

As you slow, try to move your vehicle to the side of the road. Moving away from traffic will protect your safety and that of your passengers. Activate your hazard lights to warn other drivers of your disabled vehicle.

Low tire pressure can put your tires at a higher risk of exploding. Prioritizing tire maintenance and checking tire pressure prior to a long road trip can help you prevent an exploding tire.
